I have the great privilege to review another wonderful book, Talking to Jesus: A Fresh Perspective on Prayer, by Jeannie Blackmer.
The title alone caught my attention and I became excited to see what this book has to offer. Jeannie uses a unique and personal approach to a topic that can often times be tricky to navigate. In sharing her struggle of how to pray for her growing children, we see Jeannie’s beautiful heart and how it lead to the development of this book.
Jeannie uses stories from the book of Matthew and retells them in a way to make them come alive, as though you yourself were there. She develops the encounters into scenes, making up names, actions, thoughts, and dialogues for the main characters, as she sees them in her mind. Through this, we are able to see the people who encounter Jesus are no different than we are. They have similar fears, worries, desires and questions that many of us have today. We see them encounter Jesus and have conversation, opening our eyes to see that we too can have conversation with Him.
One of my favorite stories Jeannie shares from Matthew is Peter walking on water. Peter says in verse 14:28, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. This has been my heart since the passing of my mom 17 months ago. To encourage me to continue my conversational intimacy with my Father as I enter into the pain and grief, as I enter into a deeper desire to know who I am as a precious and favored daughter of the King.
Whatever inspires you or motivates you to increase the conversations you have with your Father, I encourage you to take a look at this resource.
